There’d been a particularly violent storm that night. Normally the aircar landing pad was protected from these things by a low-level shield, but the storm had knocked out the power and the pad had iced over. He woke up, took in a cup of tea, then woke up Demora so that she could help him shovel off the ice and snow.

She wasn’t too happy.

He agreed to let her shower and eat while he got started.

But after over an hour of back-breaking work—it had been a fierce storm—she was still nowhere to be seen. He made a snowball and threw it at her window. Fifteen more minutes and she still wasn’t there. He went and thumped on the door. A surly “All right!” answered him. He went back to work. Finally, she emerged, shovel in hand, a scowl etched deeply into her features.

“I don’t want to be doing this,” she said.

“Well, that’s evident,” he snapped. “Do you think I want to be?”

“It’s the weekend! I was going to—”

That was it. Was he supposed to do all this while she did her nails inside? “You know what, Demora? Life’s cold.”

He recognized the look she gave him. Her mother had given it to him a few times and it hurt. But she bent over and started to shovel.
